Kathy Mandt has been involved in interdisciplinary planetary research since 2007 with over 100 lead and co-authored refereed publications in the areas of the photochemistry, dynamics and evolution of planetary atmospheres, solar wind interaction with cometary comae, mass spectrometry, ultraviolet surface mapping and surface geomorphology. Her research has covered comets, the atmospheres of Titan, Pluto, Triton and Mars as well as the surface of Mars and the Moon. She carried out these investigations as a Co-Investigator and Project Scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) and as a science team member of the Europa Clipper Plasma Interaction for Magnetic Sounding (PIMS), the Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC) Ion Electron Spectrometer (IES), and the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS).

Kathy has served in several leadership roles throughout her career including development and management of a career development workshop from 2012 to 2017. She is the Project Scientist for the Io Volcano Observer Phase A Concept Study and the Deputy Project Scientist for the Interstellar Probe pre-Decadal study. She was the section supervisor for the SRE Astrobiology section from 2018 to 2020 and has served as the SR Chief Scientist for Exoplanets since 2019. Kathy is on the Steering Committee for the Outer Planets Assessment Group (OPAG), served  on the Exoplanets, Astrobiology, and Solar System committee for the Astrophysics 2020 Decadal Survey, and is a member of the Giant Planet Systems panel for the Planetary Science Decadal Survey. In 2016-2017 she served on the NASA Ice Giants Science Definition Team (SDT) and has served on the Science Organizing Committee of several international workshops. She is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists, having served as an Adjoint Professor in the University of Texas at San Antonio Physics program 2013-2017. She has mentored three postdoctoral researchers, several graduate students and one ASPIRE intern. She is also committed to community service, having served on numerous Telescope Allocation Committees (TAC) and NASA review panels, serving several times as the group chief. She served on the American Astronomical Society's (AAS) Division for Planetary Science (DPS) Professional Culture and Climate Subcommittee (PCCS) 2017-2019.
